How to Cancel Insurance After Donating Your Car in Georgia

Wait until pickup and title hand-off are complete, then finish any state registration steps before you cancel coverage with your insurer.

Cancel insurance after the car has been picked up and the title has been handed off, never before. Until then, you may still legally own the vehicle, so an early cancellation can leave you exposed to an uninsured loss. Some states also penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered. If plates or registration must be handled before cancellation, do that first. Then call your insurer with the pickup/title-transfer date and ask about any prorated refund.

The right cancellation sequence

1

Confirm Pickup And Title

Before calling the insurer, make sure the vehicle is no longer in your possession and the signed title was handed off at pickup. Use the pickup date as your working donation date. Keep any pickup receipt, title-copy notes, or emails from Vision Wheels with your records. Do not cancel while the vehicle is still waiting in your driveway, garage, workplace lot, or curbside spot.

2

Handle Plates And Registration

Next, handle plates and registration in the order your state requires. Some states want plates surrendered or registration cancelled before insurance is stopped; others allow insurance cancellation after the sale, donation, or transfer is reported. Because these rules can change, confirm the required plate and registration steps with the Georgia DMV before you remove coverage. 3

Call With Donation Date

Call your insurance company after the pickup and title hand-off are complete, and after any required registration step is done. Give the representative the exact effective date you want: the pickup/title-transfer date. Say that the vehicle was donated through Vision Wheels and is no longer yours. Ask the representative to repeat the effective date before they process the change.

4

Remove Or Cancel Coverage

If this was one vehicle on a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only that vehicle and leave the rest of the policy active. Confirm that the remaining drivers, vehicles, and coverages are unchanged. If this was your only insured vehicle, ask to cancel the policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. Continuous-coverage note: if you plan to buy or drive another car soon, ask how to avoid a gap that could affect your next policy.

5

Request Refund And Confirmation

If you paid ahead, ask whether a prorated premium refund is due from the pickup/title-transfer date. Refunds depend on the insurer’s billing rules, policy terms, and any unpaid balance. Then request written confirmation by email, mail, or secure account message. It should show the vehicle removed or policy cancelled, the effective date, and any refund or balance due. Save it with your donation and title records.

What Date To Use

Use the date the pickup and title hand-off were completed, not the date you first submitted the donation form. Insurance is tied to risk and ownership, so the safe cancellation date is the point when you no longer control the vehicle and have transferred the title. If pickup is imminent but not complete, wait. A parked car can still be damaged, stolen, or involved in a loss before pickup, and you do not want that gap.

Common questions

Can I cancel insurance as soon as pickup is scheduled?

No. A scheduled pickup is not the same as a completed pickup and title hand-off. If the car is still on your property or still legally yours, keep coverage active. Cancel only after the vehicle has been picked up, the title has been handed off, and any required plate or registration step is complete.

What if my insurer asks for proof of donation?

Give the documents you already have, such as a pickup receipt, donation confirmation, title hand-off note, or later tax paperwork when available. Do not agree to an effective date earlier than the pickup/title-transfer date. If registration status is an issue, pause and confirm the correct sequence with the state DMV.

Will I get money back after cancelling?

You may receive a prorated refund if you prepaid and the policy terms allow it. The amount depends on the insurer’s billing rules, the cancellation date, and any unpaid balance. Ask the representative to calculate the refund from the pickup/title-transfer date and send written confirmation of the credit or balance.
